Do You Really Need Professional Hair and Makeup for Maternity Photos?

The honest, pressure-free answer — and everything you need to know to show up feeling your most beautiful.
Before almost every maternity session I photograph at Imagine That Photography, the same question comes up: "Do I need to get my hair and makeup done professionally?"
It's one of those questions that sounds simple but carries a lot behind it. Will I look overdone? Will I look like myself? Is it worth the extra investment? What if I just do my own?
So let me give you the honest answer — the one I give every client who asks me directly:
Whatever makes you feel the most beautiful and most like yourself is absolutely the right choice. Full stop.

There Is No Right Answer — Only Your Answer
——————————————————————————
Some of my most stunning sessions have been with clients who arrived fully glam — professional blowout, flawless full-coverage makeup, lashes, the works. They walked in feeling like a million dollars and it showed in every single frame.
Some of my most stunning sessions have been with clients who did their own makeup at home, wore their hair the way they wear it every single day, and arrived feeling completely and naturally themselves. And they were just as radiant, just as beautiful, just as present in their images.
This is the truth that the photography industry doesn't always tell you: confidence is more photogenic than any product, any technique, or any amount of professional preparation. A woman who feels like herself — genuinely, comfortably, authentically herself — photographs beautifully. Every time.
So the real question isn't "should I get professional hair and makeup?" The real question is: "Which option makes me feel most like the best version of myself?"

The Case for Professional Hair and Makeup
——————————————————————————
If you have ever wanted a genuine excuse to be completely pampered — a maternity session is it.
I work with a few incredible hair and makeup artists who specialize in maternity styling, and I am happy to connect you with one of them when you book your session. They are warm, talented, and gifted at one very specific thing: making you look like the most luminous, radiant version of yourself. Not a different person. Not a heavily made-up version of you. Just you — turned all the way up.
They understand pregnancy skin. They know how hormones shift your complexion, how to work with the natural glow that pregnancy creates rather than covering it, and how to create looks that feel effortless and beautiful in person while also photographing flawlessly under professional studio lighting.
You would schedule your hair and makeup appointment with them directly before your session day — arriving camera-ready, feeling pampered, and ready to step in front of the lens with complete confidence. Many of my clients tell me getting glam beforehand was the moment the whole experience started to feel real and exciting.
If this sounds like you, simply mention it when you reach out and I will pass along their details.

The Case for Doing Your Own
——————————————————————————
Doing your own hair and makeup is a completely valid and often wonderful choice. There is something to be said for showing up to your session looking exactly the way the people who love you most see you every day. That authenticity shows in images. It ages beautifully. It will still look like you in twenty years.
If you are planning to do your own makeup, here are a few gentle tips that will help it translate beautifully on camera:
Build a little more coverage than usual. Studio lighting is soft and flattering, but it does pick up redness and uneven skin tone slightly more than natural light. A touch more foundation or concealer than your everyday amount goes a long way.
Define your eyes. On camera, eyes can lose a little definition. A coat of mascara — even just one — makes a noticeable difference. A fine line of eyeliner along the upper lash line adds polish without looking heavy.
Add a lip color you love. Your lips appear in so many images — close-ups, profile shots, moments of laughter and softness. A lipstick or tinted gloss in a shade you genuinely love adds a finishing touch that photographs beautifully.
Set your skin. A light dusting of setting powder, especially across the forehead and nose, helps keep skin looking matte and fresh throughout the session under studio lighting.
Style your hair the way you feel most yourself. Loose waves, a soft updo, a sleek blowout — all of these photograph beautifully. The one thing to avoid is a very tight ponytail or bun that pulls at the hairline and leaves imprint marks if you decide to wear your hair down for another look.

What Actually Shows Up in the Images
——————————————————————————
After eight years of photographing women at this particular season of life, here is what I know to be true:
The thing that shows up most powerfully in every single image is not the makeup. It is not the hair. It is not the gown or the lighting or the carefully chosen backdrop.
It is the feeling.
The feeling of being seen. Of having given yourself permission to slow down, to be present, to exist fully in this extraordinary moment of your life. That feeling — however you arrived at it, whatever you're wearing, however your hair is done — is what creates the images that make people stop scrolling. That makes a client cry at her ordering appointment. That gets printed large and hung on a wall and looked at every single day for the rest of a family's life together.
My job is to create the conditions where you feel that. Everything else is details.
