When Should I Book a Newborn Photo Session — Before or After Birth?

Why Booking a Newborn Photographer Early is Essential for Expecting Parents

You just found out you're expecting. The nursery isn’t painted yet, the name list is three pages long, and your hospital bag is something you’ll think about later. Booking a newborn photographer is probably not at the top of your list right now.
But here’s what I wish every expecting parent knew from the very beginning: booking a newborn photographer is one of the few things on your entire pregnancy to-do list that genuinely cannot wait until the last minute.
Not because of paperwork or deposits — but because of something much simpler. The window for newborn photography is extraordinarily short. The photographers who do it beautifully tend to be booked out months in advance.
At Imagine That Photography, I work with families across Long Island to create newborn portraits that they will treasure for generations. The single most common thing I hear from parents who reach out too late is: "I had no idea I needed to book this early."
This post is for you — so you never have to say that.
The Short Answer: Book During Your Pregnancy
The best time to book your newborn session is while you are still pregnant — ideally between 20 and 30 weeks.
I know that might feel early. Your baby isn't here yet. You don’t know their birthday, their weight, or what they’ll look like. How can you possibly book a session?
Here’s how it works: when you book during pregnancy, we don’t lock in a specific date. Instead, we reserve a flexible window around your due date. Once your baby arrives, you contact me with their birthday, and we confirm the exact session date — typically within the first 5 to 14 days of life, which is the ideal window for newborn photography.
This system means you get the date security of booking early, combined with the flexibility of not knowing exactly when your baby will arrive. It’s the best of both worlds — and it’s how almost every experienced newborn photographer structures their bookings.

Why You Can't Wait Until After the Baby Arrives
This is the part most first-time parents don’t realize until it’s too late.
Newborn photography has a very specific window: the first 5 to 14 days of life. During this time, babies are still in that deeply sleepy, naturally curled newborn stage. They settle easily, tuck into beautiful poses without resistance, and their skin still has that impossibly soft, fresh quality that simply cannot be recreated even two or three weeks later.
After about two weeks, babies become more alert and wakeful. They are harder to settle into posed setups, startle more easily, and achieving those classic, serene newborn images becomes significantly more challenging. The images are still beautiful — but they are a completely different kind of session.
Now think about what life looks like in those first 5 to 14 days after your baby comes home. You are running on no sleep. You are feeding around the clock. You are navigating a level of exhaustion, joy, and overwhelm that is unlike anything you’ve experienced before. The last thing you want to be doing is scrolling Instagram, trying to find a photographer, sending inquiry emails, and hoping someone has availability.
Booking during pregnancy means that when your baby arrives, one thing is already handled. You simply send me a message, we confirm your date, and you focus on your baby. That peace of mind is genuinely priceless in those first days.
What Happens If You Wait Too Long
I hear from parents who waited every single week. I want to be honest with you about what that looks like because you deserve the truth rather than a polished version of it.
If you reach out after your baby is born and they are already past two weeks old, you may find that:
The newborn window has passed or is closing fast. Every day after the two-week mark makes the classic posed newborn session more challenging. By three to four weeks, babies are much more wakeful, and the session requires significantly more time and patience to achieve the same results.
Your preferred photographer may not have availability. Experienced newborn photographers who specialize in safety and artistry — the kind of photographer you want handling your brand new baby — tend to be booked out weeks or months in advance. Last-minute spots exist, but they are the exception, not the rule.
You may feel rushed and stressed. The newborn stage is already one of the most intense seasons of parenthood. Adding the pressure of scrambling to find a photographer while sleep-deprived and postpartum is a stress that is completely avoidable.
None of this is meant to frighten you. It’s meant to help you. Because the solution is genuinely simple: reach out early, and none of this applies to you.
What If You're Already Past 30 Weeks?
If you’re reading this in your third trimester — please don’t panic. Reach out today.
Depending on where you are in your pregnancy and my current availability, there is a very good chance we can still make it work. I always do my best to accommodate families who reach out later in pregnancy, and I will be completely honest with you about what’s possible.
The earlier you contact me, even now, the better your options will be. A phone call or a quick message to my studio takes five minutes and could save you an enormous amount of stress later.
What If Your Baby Has Already Arrived?
First — congratulations. And second — reach out right now, today.
If your baby is under two weeks old, there is still time. Contact me immediately, and we will do everything possible to get you in before that golden window closes.
If your baby is between two and four weeks old, a session is still absolutely possible. It will look a little different — more awake, more lifestyle-oriented, less of the deeply posed sleeping setups — but it can still be incredibly beautiful. Let’s talk about what we can create together.
If your baby is over a month old, newborn-style posed sessions are no longer the right fit — but a baby milestone session absolutely is. Babies change so quickly in those first months, and there are beautiful ways to document every stage. Reach out, and we’ll find the right session for exactly where your baby is right now.
The Maternity-to-Newborn Connection
Here’s something many families don’t think about until after the fact: booking your maternity and newborn sessions together is one of the smartest decisions you can make.
When you book both sessions during your pregnancy, you get the security of knowing both are handled. You also qualify for our maternity-to-newborn bundle, which includes a discount on your newborn session — a beautiful way to document the full journey from expecting to arrival at a combined investment that reflects the complete story.
The images from both sessions also complement each other in a way that is truly extraordinary. A maternity portrait of your bump alongside a newborn portrait of your baby in those same hands — displayed together on your wall or across the pages of an heirloom album — tells a story that no single session alone can tell.
It is, without exception, one of the most meaningful things I get to create for the families I work with.
A Simple Timeline to Save
20–30 weeks pregnant → Ideal time to book your newborn session and design consultation
30–36 weeks pregnant → Still a great time to book — reach out as soon as possible
36+ weeks pregnant → Contact me immediately to check availability
Baby has arrived, under 2 weeks old → Reach out today — we will prioritize getting you in
Baby is 2–4 weeks old → Still possible — contact me to discuss your options
Baby is 1 month or older → Let’s talk about a milestone session instead
NOTE FOR WIX: You can format this as a simple two-column table (Stage / What to Do) using the table tool in your Wix editor, or leave it as a list — both look great.

The First Two Weeks Go Faster Than You Think
Every parent I have ever photographed has said some version of the same thing when they see their newborn images for the first time: "I can't believe how small they were."
Not because they’ve forgotten — but because the mind, in its extraordinary way, can’t quite hold onto the precise smallness of a newborn. The weight of them in your hands. The way they fit against your chest. The specific curl of their fingers around yours in those very first days.
Photographs hold what memory cannot. They give you back the details — the eyelashes, the lips, the impossibly tiny feet — in a way that is vivid, permanent, and real.
Booking early is how you make sure those photographs exist.
I would be honored to create them for your family.
